The Netherlands’ largest shipbuilding company has sued the Dutch government for losses caused to its business by sanctions against Russia.
The company’s representative, Rick van de Weg, told Bloomberg that Damen Shipyards Group NV is seeking compensation because it is “suffers damages” as a result of the sanctions.
“Before the sanctions, Damen had signed contracts with Russian ship buyers, and after the invasion of Ukraine the Dutch government decided that such contracts may not be honored by the Dutch business community,” he said via email.
Damen, based in the Dutch city of Gorinchem, filed its lawsuit in the Rotterdam court on May 10, according to a court spokesman.
The case has not yet progressed but is expected to be heard next year.
