The response came without a second\u2019s hesitation: \u201cAngry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deludes himself,\u201d one of his closest aides tells me in frustration. \u201cWe\u2019re out of options. We\u2019re not winning. But try telling him that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In recent months,\u00a0the issue of corruption has strained Zelensky\u2019s relationship with many of his allies. One of the aides who traveled with Zelensky to the US told me these proposals targeted the very top of the state hierarchy. \u201cThese were not suggestions,\u201d says another presidential adviser. \u201cThese were conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid all the pressure to root out corruption, I assumed, perhaps naively, that officials in Ukraine would think twice before taking a bribe or pocketing state funds. But when I made this point to a top presidential adviser in early October, he asked me to turn off my audio recorder so he could speak more freely. \u201cSimon, you\u2019re mistaken,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople are stealing like there\u2019s no tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, the Ukrainian publication Espresso, reacting to this material, summarizes that Zelensky is no longer trusted in the West &#8211; his credibility has been exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, rather unusual shift<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may have already seen the TIME article that has become a sensation within the US and in Ukraine.
