In less than a year, the couriers flew more than 80 flights, carrying cases full of drug money. The group communicated on a Whatsapp group called&nbsp;<em>Sunshine and Lollipops<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The couriers were given business class flights to take advantage of a larger luggage allowance and check-in closer to the departure time, investigators said. Around \u00a3500,000 was crammed into suitcases that were then packed with coffee granules or sprayed with air freshener to disguise the scent from sniffer dogs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>British police have targeted London to Dubai laundering routes, concerned that criminal cash becomes much harder to trace once it\u2019s taken out of the country. The United Arab Emirates has been in the spotlight over dirty money flows and last\u00a0March, the global financial crimes watchdog placed the country on a gray list for failing to do enough to uncover illicit funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The money, said to be cash from drug dealing, was collected from crime gangs around the UK before being counted in London, the NCA said. The couriers themselves were paid around \u00a33,000 per trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese couriers were important cogs in a large money laundering wheel,\u201d Ian Truby, the NCA\u2019s senior investigating officer, said in a statement. \u201cThe crime group they belonged to was responsible for smuggling eye-watering amounts of criminal cash out of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Useful Idiot\u2019 Jailed Over London-Dubai Cash Smuggling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emirati Abdullah Mohammed Ali Bin Beyat Alfalasi, the accused mastermind of the scheme, was jailed last year for nine years and seven months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alfalasi offered a \u201cmoney laundering service\u201d to criminal organizations in both the UK and other European countries, prosecutors said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jonathan Browning April 26, 2023 at 3:52 PM GMT+4Updated onApril 26, 2023 at 6:28 PM GMT+ A network of couriers who smuggled more than \u00a3100 million ($124 million) of criminal cash in suitcases from the UK to Dubai was found guilty following a trial of one of the largest money laundering scams ever recorded.
